Sampling:
In the rain and wind shielded interior of the sampler, an adhesive collection plate on the bottom of the unit collects the atmospheric dust particles (sedimentation principle). The collection surface consists of either a transparent, glass-clear sticky foil, or other surface lightly covered with an adhesive film. The exposure time is usually one week, but can be changed if emission or other conditions make it necessary. An analysis of the collection plate is easily done by optical microscopy. A detailed description of the passive sampler, the sampling technique and performanance characteristics are published in the VDI guideline 2119, part 4. Additionally,
the housing of the sample recommended by DIN EN 3528-3 can be used
for wind and sun protected exposure of diffusion samplers for NO2
(according to Palmes) and Benzene (Perkin-Elmer) .
Possible applications: Easy, and small technical handling (electrical independent) makes the sampler suitable for various measuring and monitoring functions, even on a larger measuring scale. Coarse dust particles above 2.5 µm (soil minerals, combustion residues, tire abrasion, sea salt, pollen and spores) are sampled by sedimentation after entering the interior of the Sigma-2. Apart from measuring the total number deposition, a single particle analysis provides the size distribution for the different particle groups. A chemical analysis of additionally exposed diffusion tubes, supplies the average NO2 or Benzene concentration in the exposure time. |
